Airline tickets will cost you less this fall, report finds

Missed out on traveling this summer due to high costs? You are in luck.

A report came from the travel booking app on Tuesday Hopper Airlines were found to be cutting ticket costs for the fall season, making the next few months an ideal time to take a last-minute vacation.

The app found that flight prices for this month and next are averaging $211 per ticket, which is 29% lower than the previous three months of peak summer travel. And when compared to previous years, fares have decreased by 9% from 2022 and 10% from 2019.

And it’s not just a domestic travel trend; Fares to top international destinations have also fallen significantly, with flights to Europe about $330 less, a 31% drop in prices. This summer, the average price of a flight to Europe was $1,000 per ticket, and this September and October, they’re looking like $738 per ticket.

These fall months are generally considered “shoulder season”, as many Americans are going back to school or have just returned from summer travel. These trends lead some airlines to lower their ticket prices in the autumn to encourage travelers to go on another vacation before the busy holiday season.

And it’s not just flights that will save you money on autumn holidays. Hopper found that some hotels and rental car companies are also joining the price-cutting trend.

Average hotel accommodation rates have declined an average of 5% compared to the peak of summer, and in some top markets, this trend will save you a big chunk of change. For example, rates in Orlando have dropped 10% since the peak of the summer, and rates in San Diego have dropped 20% in the past month.

But this isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution for all your bucket list destinations, especially those with fall events like New York City, which hosted the US Open and Fashion Week.

For rental cars, average prices have dropped 5% since the summer, and gas prices remain lower than last summer, meaning both your air and land travel will cost less this fall. Might be possible.
