Police in New Mexico are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a baby found inside a trash can at a hospital.
The Hobbs Police Department says a 16-year-old girl went to Covenant Health Hobbs Hospital with her mother on September 13.
The teen was reportedly admitted to a room for an undisclosed medical problem before being discharged.
After the teen left the hospital, staff found the newborn’s body inside the toilet area of the patient’s room, police said.
It is unclear whether the child was alive at any time before being thrown into the trash.
The Hobbs Police Department said the child’s body was sent to Albuquerque for an autopsy. Authorities have not said whether the teen will face charges.
This is the second time this year a baby has been found in garbage at a hospital in southeastern New Mexico.
Alexey Trevizo is 19 years old charged with murder Authorities said she gave birth in a hospital toilet and left the baby’s body in a trash bin.
Trevizo told a doctor and her mother that she didn’t know what to do because the baby wasn’t crying when she gave birth.
Trevizo was arrested, but released before trial.
