bottom line: Dutch smartphone maker Fairphone is now taking pre-orders for its latest sustainable handset, and it’s far more competitive than previous efforts in terms of sheer clout. But will cost be an issue for some potential buyers?
The Fairphone 5 sports a respectable 6.46-inch 90Hz OLED display (1224 x 2700 resolution, 20:9 aspect ratio, 880 nits peak brightness) coated with Corning Gorilla Glass 5. It is powered by a 6nm octa-core Qualcomm QCM6490 SoC alongside Adreno 642L graphics, 8GB of RAM and 256GB of local storage (expandable via microSD card for an additional 2TB of storage).
The rear camera array consists of a pair of 50-megapixel cameras. The main photographer uses a Sony IMX 800 sensor and offers optical image stabilization, a field of view of 84.1 degrees and an f/1.88 aperture lens. The ultra wide-angle camera is powered by a Sony IMX 858 sensor with an f/2.2 aperture. Both cameras use pixel binning to output higher dynamic range images at 12.5 megapixels.
The front-facing selfie camera, hidden behind a punch-hole cutout, is also 50-megapixels, but it’s from Samsung (their ISOCELL JN1). It features a 90-degree field of view, electronic image stabilization, 4K video recording at up to 30 frames per second, pixel binning and an f/2.45 aperture lens.
The latest from Fairphone Comes with a removable 4200mAh battery that can be charged up to 50 percent in just 20 minutes and comes with Android 13 pre-installed. There’s a five-year warranty, and we’ve only scratched the surface of the hardware specs.
Fairphone promises that its new phone will receive guaranteed security updates for eight years (until 2031) and that, like its previous offerings, the device is also about repairability and sustainability. Nothing is glued or permanently sealed to the phone, yet it has an IP55 rating and has passed various environmental tests.

The Fairphone 5 is available preorder Now in your choice of black, blue or clear for €699.00 ($765). Shipping begins September 14th and orders are dispatched on a first come, first served basis.
