Chinese internet users have noticed that Chinese tech companies Alibaba and Baidu have removed the name “Israel” from their online maps, although the internationally recognized borders are still shown.
The change has been discussed since the recent Hamas attack, and while spokespeople for Alibaba and Baidu did not comment on the issue, a Baidu spokesman stated that the omission may be due to limited space on the maps.

China’s Middle East envoy Zhai Jun claimed that China, “has no selfish interests on the Palestinian issue but has always stood on the side of peace, on the side of fairness and justice.”

Baidu spokesman Jing Meng wrote in a statement; “Where space is limited, our maps may not display the names or flags of some territories.”
Adding, “Users can find corresponding countries or areas on Baidu Maps by simply using the map’s search function,”
However, there have been antisemitic posts on Chinese social media platforms expressing support for Palestine.

The Brazilian President was reportedly told by a Chinese foreign minister, “the crux of the matter is that justice has not been done to the Palestinian people.”
“This conflict once again proved in an extremely tragic manner that the way to solve the Palestinian issue lies in resuming genuine peace talks as soon as possible and realizing the legitimate rights of the Palestinian nation.” concluded the Chinese official.
