Authorities had previously visited the home of the alleged Maine shooter, Robert Card, multiple times due to concerns about his mental health.
Card had undergone a mental health evaluation last summer and had even been committed to a mental health facility for two weeks.
On Friday, Card was found dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The deceased victims of the shooting were identified as seventeen individuals ranging in age from 14 to 76.
“Like many people, I’m breathing a sign of relief tonight knowing that Robert Card is no longer a threat to anyone,” said Maine Gov. Janet Mills (D).
“I also know that his death might not bring solace to many. But now is a time to heal.”
Law enforcement currently engaged in the investigation of Lewiston, Maine’s mass shooting have found evidence which they believe point to suspect Robert Card’s intentional choice of targeted locations.
According to family members of the shooter, Card was familiar with individuals at both the bowling alley and the bar who had allegedly labeled him a “pedophile.”
Key witnesses noted that Card was under the impression that Schemengees Bar and Grille and the Just-In-Time Recreation bowling alley were “broadcasting online that Robert was a pedophile.”

Card apparently took his girlfriend’s daughters out to share meals at Schemengees on occasion, “and that is where the pedophile thing in Robert’s head came from as Robert was there with (his girfriend’s) two daughters on occasions and felt that people were looking at him,” the witness stated.
Law enforcement eventually found Card behind a dumpster in Libson Falls, Maine, where he had died by means of suicide.
Card had been acting erratically and reported mental health issues including hearing voices. He made threats to carry out a shooting at a National Guard facility in Saco, Maine.
Despite police involvement, Maine’s yellow flag law, which allows temporary confiscation of firearms, did not come into play.
