Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy has shifted his perspective on former President Donald Trump’s involvement in the upcoming GOP debate, according to a report by Fox News. Ramaswamy, who previously voiced criticism of Trump, now says he has “no problem” if the frontrunner decides to skip the initial primary debates.
The change in Ramaswamy’s position emerged after a tweet by Shelby Talcott of Semafor quoted Ramaswamy as saying, “This is my chance to introduce myself to the country & so I have no issue with whatever decision he wants to make.” Ramaswamy added, “If he’s on there, great. If not, I’m fine with that.”
Ramaswamy’s current stance is in contrast to his earlier statements in May when he expressed the expectation that Trump would participate in the debates. At that time, Ramaswamy confidently stated, “I fully expect to see Donald Trump on that debate stage. It is my expectation Trump will be there because as I’ve known him he’s not a man that I know of to be afraid. He’s not somebody who’s made a habit of himself to be a coward.”
Ramaswamy’s campaign clarified that his recent comments are not a departure from his previous position. Tricia McLaughlin, the campaign’s communications director, emphasized that this debate is not the sole opportunity for candidates to present their views and that Ramaswamy remains committed to participating in other debates.
Regarding Trump’s participation, there has been no confirmation as to whether he will attend the first GOP debate hosted by Fox News in Milwaukee. It is noteworthy that the Republican National Committee requires candidates to sign a pledge, committing to support the GOP’s eventual nominee and refrain from participating in unsanctioned debates. However, Trump has refused to sign the pledge, stating, “Why would I sign it? I can name three or four people that I wouldn’t support for president. So, right there, there’s a problem.”
