Just as the fall chill sets in, the recruitment business heats up. As key decision makers return from summer vacation, the job boards are suddenly filled with exciting new opportunities again.
This makes September one of the busiest months in recruiting (after January’s New Year’s rush) and a strategic time to put your best foot forward with potential new employers.
It is also a good time for self-assessment.
How do you look on paper?
A second or third pair of eyes on your resume is a good idea. Update your resume Include recently acquired and relevant skills – this is especially important if you were already employed by your current employer prior to the pandemic.
Recruitment (particularly in the tech industry) has changed drastically in the last two years, which means employers have likely adjusted their expectations of candidates in your field.
You should also invest some time in creating sample cover letters that you can quickly adapt as exciting opportunities arise.
Think about your corporate image
It’s a good time to do that, too Do smart networking and consider following key employers and senior area leaders in your field on social media.
If possible, attend some industry events, including in the form of a webinar, and join industry-specific associations, as membership can show how motivated and passionate you are and give you a head start up the recruitment ladder.
While you’re at it, google yourself — and Google Image — and pimp your social media feeds to include the kind of posts you want every potential employer to see if they happen to peek. Recent research has shown that this is the case.
Refine your game plan
Next, plan the intensity of your attack: are you? actively or passively seek a new path? How many applications would you like to process per month? When asked to participate in a recruitment process, do you put your heart into it?
If the answer is no, don’t worry: the right spot in your inbox could make you an eager candidate.
Keep your options open, but be careful not to cast your net too far. Recruiters are often uncertain when identifying bulk application candidates. Instead, customize your approach.
Word of mouth is important
Advice and recommendations will soon become important again. Contact your existing references to let them know you’re looking and to show them why you’re a great candidate.
Consider adding new references from your current work life if you can do so discreetly. And refresh something Recruiters or HR departments of companies ask for references nowadays.
Even if it’s been a while since you’ve been on the application treadmill, remember that some things never go out of style. Research before an interview is the most important thing that impresses hiring managers, however polite follow-up afterwards is almost as important.
And finally – get on the job boards. Schedule a daily visit to the House of Talent Job Board, where fall really is a fruitful time for job seekers.
