In the aftermath of the devastating wildfires that recently swept through Maui, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has stepped in to provide relief efforts. Bishop W. Christopher Waddell, the first counselor in the Presiding Bishopric, announced a generous donation of $1 million to the American Red Cross to support the ongoing relief operations.
The Church’s donation will specifically aid the Red Cross in providing crucial assistance to those affected by the wildfires. This includes offering shelter to survivors, along with essential supplies such as meals, bedding, hygiene kits, and other necessary items. Moreover, the funds will also contribute to medical support, mental health services, and family reunification initiatives for those impacted by the disaster.

Brad Kieserman, the vice president of disaster operations and logistics at the Red Cross, expressed gratitude for the Church’s contribution, emphasizing the trust and reliability associated with the organization. Kieserman acknowledged that people often turn to the Church in times of need, recognizing the significant role it plays in extending assistance to a larger number of individuals affected by such crises.
Bishop Waddell recently met with representatives from the Red Cross to discuss the utilization of the donation and further collaboration between the Church and the relief organization. Over the weekend, Bishop Waddell, accompanied by local Church leaders, engaged with various community organizations involved in providing aid on Maui. They also had the opportunity to show Hawaii Governor Josh Green the evacuation site and shelter situated on the premises of a Church meetinghouse in Kahului.
Governor Green expressed his appreciation for the extraordinary efforts being made by the Church to support the people of Maui during this challenging time. He emphasized the importance of unity in the face of crisis, underscoring how such situations often bring communities together. Acknowledging the profound loss experienced by many individuals, the governor highlighted the significance of the Church’s involvement in providing assistance to those who may be feeling desperate and uncertain about the future.
The Church’s commitment to aiding the survivors and helping rebuild the affected communities on Maui serves as a testament to its dedication to humanitarian efforts. By partnering with trusted organizations like the Red Cross, the Church aims to maximize its impact and extend support to as many people as possible in their time of need.
