The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill said Wednesday evening that police have captured a suspect believed to be armed and dangerous on its campus. This is at least the second such incident where police have encountered an armed and dangerous individual on that campus in recent weeks.
The university issued an alert saying, “A suspect related to today’s armed and dangerous person incident has been arrested and is in custody.”
According to another alert from the university, the campus was locked at 5 pm.
Chapel Hill Police said the suspect had outstanding warrants and was identified as Mikell Deonte Harris, 27, of Durham, North Carolina.
Police said, “Harris is being sought in connection with an incident on the campus of UNC-Chapel Hill early this afternoon. UNC-Chapel Hill is leading the investigation into today’s incident.”
There is no news of anyone being shot or injured.
The arrest comes just weeks after another gunman shot and killed a faculty member on campus.
In late August, authorities charged a University of North Carolina graduate student with first-degree murder in the fatal shooting of a faculty advisor, an attack that put the campus on lockdown while police searched for the gunman.
Taili Qi, 34, was accused of murdering Zizi Yan inside a science building on the Chapel Hill campus. According to his arrest warrant, he was also charged with possession of a 9mm handgun on educational property.
